| Doric 4x4 - My Rovers - TYG | ||||||||||||||||||
What was TYG ?TYG - a 1972 series 3 Land Rover that I purchased in October 2002 to have a go at trialing. The previous owner of TYG back in 1995 decided to re-chassis her and the donor vehicle for this was a 1983 Range Rover.When I got Tyg she looked a bit cleaner than this but she didn't have a snorkel! ![]() Why is TYG called TYG ?A little bit obvious!![]() What's the specification?Engine : A 3.5 V8 low compression engine from a 1986 - 110 Land Rover.Chassis : A 1983 Range Rover Gear box : ZF 4 speed from I believe the same 1983 Range Rover as the chassis Roll Cage : It had one, but the front mounts to the bulk head rather than the chassis. Diff : 4.7-1 standard series in Range Rover Axles. Snorkel : Wickes best drain pipe and a bit of stainless steel with a mushroom top. How do you get a 3.5V8 engine into a series body ?I didn't carry out this task but I'd guess that the engine and box has been moved back about 4" and a custom rear prop shaft made.
What problems have I had since I bought her ?There have only been 3 major faults :-1. On a trial at Robin Hoods Bay I noticed that the rear axle self levelling unit had ceased and ripped the top of the axle. Needless to say I had to withdraw and be taken home courtesy of the RAC :- ![]() 2. The earth lead fell of the MSA battery isolator. I should point out that an MSA battery isolator is a little different to a Charlie Browns one. If it has an earth leek it trips out and resets after around 30 seconds. It took me a couple of hours to work out why tuning anything caused it to trip. 3. The facet fuel pump expired and once again it needed a recovery wagon. Thank goodness I had paid £35 for RAC cover! Well worth the dosh! What have I done to her since I bought her ?1. After my first ever trial, where I went into a water hole a little to far, I decided to add a snorkel.![]() 2. There was no radio so I added one - along with CB and GPS. 3. A spare wheel carrier was made from 2" box section. 4. In the rear tub there are now 3 storage compartments for tools, tents and beer. 5. And, if you haven't noticed, I've painted her orange. Was TYG painted in G4 Tango Orange ?No here's the comparison.Where is TYG now ?That's a good question. I've swapped TYG for a 110 with a tired chassis however the new owner sold TYG to someone in Lincolnshire. The 110 has good body work and an engine that has done less than 10,000 miles since it was rebuilt. This will be a donor vehicle for Project-Beta.
